Runoff, erosion, pollution, and water movement

This interactive science activity allows homeschool students to build a simple, hands-on model of a watershed using basic household items. By simulating rainfall on a miniature landscape, students will observe firsthand how water moves downhill, how runoff causes erosion, and how pollution travels through a water system.

Instructor Notes

  • Safety First: Since we are using washable markers or food coloring to represent pollution, remind students that the water in this model is not safe to drink. Adult supervision is required throughout the activity to assist with water containment and cleanup.
  • Pacing Guidance: You can break this activity into two 30-minute sessions if preferred. Spend the first 30 minutes on vocabulary, setup, and building the landscape, and the second 30 minutes on running the simulation, discussing results, and answering the reflection questions.
  • Sibling/Mixed-Age Adaptation: If you are teaching multiple children of different ages, older students can act as the "environmental scientists" who record detailed field notes and draw topographic maps of the paper watershed. Younger siblings can help crumple the paper, apply the "pollution" markers, and control the "rain" spray bottle.

Materials Needed

  • 1 sheet of white scrap paper or aluminum foil (standard printer paper works best)
  • 1 shallow baking pan, tray, or plastic storage bin (to contain the water)
  • 2 or 3 water-soluble washable markers (dark colors like brown, red, green, or blue work best)
  • 1 spray bottle filled with tap water (or a small cup of water and a spoon to drizzle water)
  • Permanent marker (optional, for labeling)
  • Paper towels (for cleanup)

Key Concepts to Introduce

Before starting the activity, read and discuss these key terms with your students:

  • Watershed: An area of land where all the water that falls on it drains off and goes to the same common outlet, such as a stream, river, lake, or ocean. Think of it like a giant basin or funnel.
  • Runoff: Water from rain, snowmelt, or irrigation that flows over the land surface instead of sinking into the ground.
  • Erosion: The process where soil, rock, or other materials are worn away and moved by natural forces like wind or water.
  • Pollution: Harmful substances introduced into the environment. In a watershed, pollution on land can easily be washed into water sources by runoff.
  • Downstream Movement: Because of gravity, water always flows from higher elevations (high points like hills and mountains) to lower elevations (low points like valleys, lakes, and oceans).

Setup

  1. Cover your work surface with a tablecloth or garbage bag to protect it from stray marker ink or water splashes.
  2. Place your shallow tray or baking pan in the center of the workspace.
  3. Have the sheet of paper, markers, and spray bottle ready.

Step-by-Step Activity Instructions

Step 1: Create the Landscape

Have your students gently crumple the sheet of white paper into a tight ball. Then, instruct them to partially uncrumple it. Do not flatten it out. The paper should remain wrinkled, with distinct high ridges, peaks, valleys, and low depressions. This represents a miniature mountain landscape.

Step 2: Define the Watershed Features

Instruct students to look closely at their paper landscape.
- Use a blue washable marker to trace the highest ridges and peaks of the "mountains." These represent the boundaries of the watershed.
- Use the blue marker to draw where they think streams and rivers might form in the deep folds and valleys of the paper.
- Place the crumpled paper inside the shallow baking tray so that it stands up on its own, maintaining its hilly shape.

Step 3: Add the Pollution

Explain that human activities happen all over this land.
- Have students use a brown or red washable marker to draw small dots on the hillsides. Tell them these dots represent "pollution" on the land. Examples include loose soil from construction sites (which causes erosion), litter on the streets, or motor oil on driveways.
- Have them use a green washable marker to make dots in other areas to represent excess fertilizers or pesticides on lawns and farms.

Step 4: Make It Rain (The Simulation)

Hand the spray bottle to the students. Instruct them to hold the spray bottle about six inches above the paper landscape and gently mist the top of the "mountains" to simulate a rainstorm.
- Observation Prompt: Tell students to watch the water closely as it hits the paper. Ask: Where does the water go first? How does it move? What happens to the marker ink?
- Continue spraying until the paper is quite wet and water begins pooling in the bottom of the tray.

Step 5: Clean Up

  • Carefully lift the wet paper landscape from the tray and place it directly into a trash can.
  • Use paper towels to wipe up any water or marker residue left in the tray.
  • Have students wash their hands with warm water and soap.

Student Instructions

Follow these steps to complete your watershed experiment:

  1. Crumple your paper into a ball, then gently unfold it halfway. Leave plenty of high ridges (hills) and low folds (valleys).
  2. Place your paper in the shallow tray. It should look like a miniature mountain range.
  3. Trace the ridges of your mountains using a blue washable marker. These high points act as the divide between different water paths.
  4. Mark your pollution on the hillsides using brown, red, or green washable markers. Imagine these are spots where people littered, sprayed garden chemicals, or left oily puddles.
  5. Rain on your watershed by spraying water onto the highest points of your paper landscape. Watch how the water travels.
  6. Record your observations in your notebook as the "rain" falls. Notice where the colored inks mix and where they finally settle.

Reflection Questions

Have your students answer these questions aloud or write their answers in a science journal:

  1. How did the water move? Did the water flow up the ridges, or did it travel down into the valleys? What force caused it to move this way?
  2. What happened to the "pollution" (the marker ink) when it rained? How did the pollution travel from the dry hillsides into the valleys and water pools?
  3. How does this model show erosion? If the paper fibers represented real soil and rock on a mountain, what would the rushing water do to the shape of those hills over a long period of time?
  4. Real-world connection: Based on what you saw today, if someone drops trash on a sidewalk far away from a river, can that trash still end up polluting the river? Explain how.
